René Descartes was born on March 31, 1596 in La Haye en Touraine, which in 1967 was named Descartes in his honor. He came from an old noble family. He was the son of Joachim (French) - a lawyer and municipal clerk - and Jeanne née. Brochard, who died one year after the birth of another son, who also lived only a few days. René was the second boy in a family that was enlightened at the time. Its members took an active part in the cultural life of the country. One of René's ancestors, Peter Descartes, was a doctor of medicine. His father-in-law, Jan Ferrand, was also a physician, experienced surgeon and expert in kidney disease. The philosopher's mother, Joanna Brochard, came from the Sauzaj family, who for many years were the custodians of the royal university library in Poitiers. René's father remarried in 1600 and had two more children from the new relationship. René spent his childhood with his two older siblings, Pierre (French) and Jeanne, at his maternal grandmother's house. About these early years of Descartes' life almost no information has survived; Descartes himself, with the exception of one or two instances, never spoke of the years of his childhood.
